The date refers to the day of the death of Zumbi dos Palmares, leader of Quilombo de Palmares, who fought to preserve the way of life of enslaved Africans who managed to escape slavery. Quilombo de Palmares was located in Serra da Barriga, in the former Captaincy of Pernambuco.
