Historically, terreiro communities have faced racist and prejudiced attacks from hegemonic cultures since their formation in Brazil. What has varied, over time, is the way in which their rights are ignored, disrespected or violated. In recent years, it has been common for adherents of these religions to be physically and verbally assaulted, to be prevented from wearing their garments and props, and to have their worship spaces destroyed. All of this without any response or protection from the public authorities. The consequences of these acts of discrimination, racism and prejudice on the mental and physical health of this population are immeasurable. (Brazil Fund)
