Martinho da Vila

Martinho José Ferreira, Martinho da Vila, doctor honoris causa, singer, composer, musician, writer, poet and defender of black culture. An important figure in Rio de Janeiro samba, Martinho da Vila represents in his compositions the Brazilian suburbs, in addition to celebrating the African heritage in the country's culture and addressing daily matters in a poetic way. The name Martinho da Vila stems from the relationship he established with the samba school Unidos de Vila Isabel in the mid-1960s, becoming the main composer and author of the group's plots.
