Movie Rosal da Liberdade

Redenção, Ceará, was the first city in Brazil to free its captives and Fazenda Livramento, the scene of the mistreatment of slaves, still preserves the old slave quarters and a museum that keeps a little of the history of a slave and hostile society. Since the 17th century, the lands of Redenção have benefited from the planting of sugar cane, and from the 19th century onwards, their mills had African slaves as their labor. In 1883, abolitionists Liberato Barroso, José do Patrocínio, João Cordeiro, Justiniano de Serpa, among others, witnessed the freedom of 116 slaves from the village, 5 years before the Golden Law, which ended slavery in Brazil. Rosal da Liberdade brings reports on the hostilities of farm owners against black men, women and children subjected to humiliating treatment in their slave quarters. Historians analyze the circumstances and conveniences that marked the abolition of slavery in Ceará. "Rosal da Liberdade" also records the last interview by Abdias Nascimento, the greatest human rights activist for the Afro-Brazilian population. The documentary “Rosal da Liberdade” by the journalist Marilena Lima was awarded by the VIII Ceará Edital of Cinema and Video 2010/2011.
