EP4 - Black Poetry of Éle Semog
Black Poetry of Éle Semog
Ras Adauto interviews the poet Ele Semog at SESC in 1985. Éle Semog is one of the most renowned black poets in Brazil. Born in Nova Iguaçu, his poems are in books, such as O Arco-Íris Negro (1979) and Atabaques (1984), in partnership with José Carlos Limeira and A Cor da Demand (1997). He collaborated in anthologies, such as The reason of the flame (1986) and writes in periodicals like Cadernos Negros. In the preface to Atabaques, written in 1979, Oliveira Silveira draws attention for the difference between Éle Semog's poetry and "... alienated black poets or lyricists of crazy Creole samba-enredo, weaving laas to the princess and a deceptive abolition". This reinforces the thesis defended here that contemporary black poetry is a radical reinterpretation of Brazil and, therefore, of the Negro himself. Éle Semog is one of the demystifying poets in the official history of Brazil. In Atabaques, in the poems grouped under the title of Third exercise: Identifying, Semog historically rescues the identity and dignity of the black race in works like Attempted Murder, Atabaques, "Roses and Vultures", and If she does I undo.
