Expo Africa-Brasil - Book Launch
Cultne with images and editing by Filó Filho recorded the exhibition and the launch of the book that paid tribute to Afro-Brazilian art and culture. Abdias Nascimento, central figure of the Exhibition "Africa-Brazil, Ancestrality and Contemporary Expressions" can be seen in the Exhibition that brings together works by Abdias Nascimento and four other Brazilian artists, including our interviewee, the graphic design from Rio de Janeiro Luis Carlos Gä.
In honor of Abdias do Nascimento's memory, the Afro-Brazilian Research and Studies Institute (Ipeafro), in partnership with the Ministry of Culture, Fundação Cultural Palmares (FCP) and the Cultural Center of Federal Justice of Rio de Janeiro, held the exhibition "Africa-Brazil, Ancestrality and Contemporary Expressions". The show took an audio visual approach to the history, tradition and symbology of African civilizations and their contributions to the Brazilian cultural legacy.
Works by artists that promote the appreciation of Afro-Brazilian culture were selected to compose the collection of the exhibition. The exhibition includes: José Heitor da Silva (wooden sculpture), Sebastião Januário (painting), Luiz Carlos Gá (graphic design) and Maurício Pestana (cartoons and posters). Actress Iléa Ferraz appears with the award that she created and was awarded to Abdias Nascimento in 2007.
The exhibition is part of a continuous action in the field of education promoted by Ipeafro, and presents the collection of pieces created by the Institute, such as the Timeline of African Peoples, where it is illustrated how Africans produced culture and knowledge for millennia in freedom and sovereignty. And also the work of the institutions created by Abdias - the Teatro Experimental do Negro, in 1944; Museum of Black Art in 1950 and Ipeafro himself created in 1981. The exhibition "Africa-Brazil, Ancestrality and Contemporary Expressions" that pays tribute to the memory of Abdias Nascimento can be seen at the Cultural Center of Federal Justice in downtown Rio de Janeiro from October 8 to December 4, 2011 (source: Denise Porfírio - Revista Africas)
